The Last Lap
TOPIC: THE LAST LAP
READ 1 CORINTHIANS 9:24-27
MEMORIZE: People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction (1 Tim 6:9).
Message
In athletics, long-distance races involve running round the field more than once. Such races include 400-meter, 800-meter, 1500-meter, and 4 × 400 relay race, to mention but a few. Each of these long-distance races involves rigorous training and stress running. There is the need for real stamina to be able to cope with rigours of the races. In fact, there are occasions where athletes have fallen by the way side due to exhaustion; some have even in the process given up the ghost.
The Bible confirms that Everyone who competes in the games (both short and long races) goes into strict training i.e. is temperate in all things. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever (1 Cor 9:25).
You need strict training from God's Word, relationship with others, and experience (both personal and others') to run the race well. Spiritual stamina is another great need. There are situations where, ordinarily, the natural man drops out, but by the help of the Holy Spirit who gives the needed stamina, you can run the longest of races, climb the highest of mountains, and swim the widest of oceans.
Most unfortunately, some athletes become weary and worn-out when they get to the last lap of their races. The last lap of your Christian race is when you are preparing to end your earthly stay. No one knows when exactly. Hence, you need to keep running the race until when you are called home. The way to avoid turnout till the end is to continually wait upon the Lord (Isa 40:28-31). One thing is sure: He has begun the good work in you; He will see to the glorious conclusion (Php. 1:6).
PRAYER POINTS:
Lord, give me the strength to last in You till the end.
Lord, put Your fear in the heart of every leader in the Church and this nation to moderate their dealings with Your people.
Lord, stem the tides of unwanted pregnancies, abortion and suicide.
