Bribery
TOPIC: BRIBERY
READ 1 SAMUEL 12:3
MEMORIZE: You hate the one who reproves in court and despise him who tells the truth (Amos 5:10).
Message
A bribe is money or any other incentive given to somebody as incentive to do something, especially something illegal or dishonest. To bribe is to give undue favour to someone to change the course of an event in the bribe giver's advantage.
The Bible says it blinds the eyes of the prophet. The offerer and the taker are both guilty, from the standpoint of God. However, at times, the receiver might not immediately know the motive of the giver. Bribery is not only monetary; it can be material, like giving house, car or equipment, as well as manpower, like a service rendered.
As Christians, God expects that we should not be engulfed in such corrupt practice wherever He puts us at home, in the office, in the church, and in the society. What is your intention in giving that 'inducement' to your boss, to secure job, or promotion, contract or loan?
In his farewell message to Israel when he was leaving office as the judge of the people, Samuel was bold enough to challenge the people to come up with evidences if he ever received any bribe from any of them.
As a child of God, you must refrain from giving or taking bribe. In the administration of justice, the Bible warns, Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous (Deut 16:19).
We must get rid of this mess that has eaten deep into the fabric of our society. Let the eradication start with you wherever you are, most especially, where people are regularly at your mercy.
PRAYER POINTS:
Lord, help me so that I will not be accused by both heaven and earth of giving or receiving bribe.
Father Lord God, help the Church to raise men and women who can live above bribery and corruption for this nation, in Jesus' name.
