Prayer And Fasting

 TOPIC: PRAYER AND FASTING

BIBLE TEXT: Mark 9:25-29
25.When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
26.And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.
27.But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.
28.And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
29.And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

MEMORY VERSE: Mark 9:29 "And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting".

CENTRAL TRUTH: There is tremendous power available to us when we pray and fast.

INTRODUCTION: Prayer simply put, is an act of communicating with God. It involves you talking to God and Him talking back to you. Talking to God can be when you are praising Him, worshipping Him, asking from Him while Him talking back can be when you are reading His word, hearing a message, hearing His voice. Now fasting is a step further into your prayers, it is when you deny yourself of pleasure especially food in order to concentrate on communicating with Him.

STUDY GUIDE
In our tet today, we see an exploit the disciples were trying to make but which was difficult for them. Mark 9: 14-29. Let's check it out:

1. A boy had a dumb spirit since he was young. Vs.21
2. The spirit torments the boy so much. Vs.18.
3. The boy's father brought him to the disciples for deliverance. Vs.17
4. The disciples could not cast out the spirit. Vs.17.
5. The disciples were challenged for their inability to deliver the boy. Vs.15. They lacked power.
6. Jesus told the father to believe. Vs.23.
7. Jesus delivered him. Vs.25.
8. The disciples were so troubled as to why they can not deliver the boy.
9. When they got home, they asked Him privately why they could not. Jesus said they need to cultivate the habit of fasting and praying if they want dominion over evil spirits.

 Lessons to learn from it:
1. The power for dominion comes when we pray and fast.
2. We must have faith.
3. Be ready to learn like the disciples that went to Jesus to ask why they could not deliver the boy.
4. There are some challenges that we can not overcome except we pray and fast.

DISCUSSION: The disciples had no power. Why?

CONCLUSION:  Jesus told the disciples categorically that they cannot have dominion over some challenges of life if they do not fast and pray. The same applies to us today. We have issues that the devil brings on our way every day that if we are not saoked in the power of God, we may not be able to overcome. The power of God becomes more in us when we fast and pray.
